OMEN → POOP: the shortest original-game route
The Poople OMEN answer takes 9 moves in the original game’s accepted word list checked on October 9, 2026. OMEN was puzzle #420, beginning at the October 8 reset. It is now a historical solution. For a different starting word today, use our daily Poople answer page.
A nudge before the answer
Begin with OPEN. Later in the route, a grain and a flying mammal lead towards the two repeated Os in the target.

Why each step works
Every line below changes one position in the previous word. These are spelling connections, not clues requiring related meanings. There may be other routes with the same length; this is one valid shortest path.
OPEN
Change M to P. OPEN is a familiar adjective or verb, and this first step keeps three letters of OMEN in place.
OPES
Change N to S. OPES is a form of the literary verb “ope,” meaning to open. Unfamiliar words can be valid bridge words; this one was accepted in the original list we checked.
OPTS
Change E to T. OPTS means chooses, as in “she opts for tea.” The spelling keeps the O, P and S in their existing positions.
OATS
Change P to A. OATS is the cereal grain. A word ladder is about spelling links, so its meaning does not need to connect with the previous word.
BATS
Change O to B. BATS can mean flying mammals or pieces of sports equipment. You have now moved away from the starting O without rearranging the other letters.
BOTS
Change A to O. BOTS is a plural of bot. The B and final S remain useful anchors while the middle of the ladder changes.
BOOS
Change T to O. BOOS can refer to sounds of disapproval. This puts the pair of Os in position before the final two moves.
BOOP
Change S to P. BOOP is the playful word for a small tap. It is accepted in the checked original list, even though another dictionary might treat it differently.
POOP
Change B to P. You have reached the target in nine single-letter changes. Count transitions, not the ten words shown in the complete ladder.
Why some OMEN solutions give a different move count
Word lists matter. A proposed eight-move route sometimes uses POOS, which was absent from the original accepted list we checked. A path is only valid for the game if all its intermediate words are allowed. Our own practice dictionary is broader and offers a different shortest route; it should not be used as proof of the original daily answer.
To check the minimum, we treated accepted words as connected whenever they differed in exactly one letter. A breadth-first search from POOP reached OMEN at distance nine. The original puzzle’s displayed par agreed with that result. This verification concerns the published word list at the check time, rather than every dictionary in English.

Good questions.
What is the Poople OMEN answer?
One shortest original-game solution is OMEN → OPEN → OPES → OPTS → OATS → BATS → BOTS → BOOS → BOOP → POOP. It takes nine moves.
Which day used OMEN?
OMEN was puzzle #420, starting on October 8, 2026 at the original game’s 08:00 UTC reset. It is a historical puzzle, not a permanent answer for today.
Does an eight-move route through POOS work?
Not in the original word list checked for this guide. POOS was not accepted there. A route found with a different dictionary is not evidence of a shorter valid original-game answer.
